Congratulations Everyone!
Dear Soundview Families,
Congratulations to our amazing Soundview community! We are very close to making our philanthropic goal of $360,000. The Annual Campaign raised $280,000. That leaves us with $80,000 to raise at Soundview’s Annual Gala. Save the date: Saturday, April 20th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Edmonds Waterfront Center.
The admission application deadline is next Friday, February 2nd. If you know a family that is interested in an ethical, rigorous and compassionate education please have them contact Victoria HERE.
Students and teachers continue to explore and inquire this week. Today, our Early Years classes held a festive winter celebration with a variety of activities. Middle Years students went to Page Ahead, which is an organization that helps to increase access to books and literacy for children and families. You can learn more about Page Ahead HERE.
A big thank you to our Soundview Parent and Guardian Association (SPGA) who partnered with Clothes for Kids for donations in the month of January. The drive ended today and was a great success. You can learn more about the Clothes for Kids mission HERE.
Here are the January and early February reminders and opportunities:
Victoria is hosting tours for current families throughout February. Our school is small, but there is a big program and a lot of new opportunities at each grade level. Come learn more about your student(s) next class and get excited for 2024-2025. Space is limited. Schedule your tour HERE.
Tomorrow, January 27th is the Orchestra Winter Retreat from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. New members will be joining for team-building activities, comedy, and over 40 hours of practice (just kidding). Learn more about joining the orchestra by contacting Mrs. Higgins HERE.
I’m excited for the annual SPGA Chili-Cook Off And Game Night tomorrow evening! This is a really fun (and filling) tradition. It will take place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Soundview Performing Arts Center. This event is for the entire family and all ages. We can’t wait for an evening of good food and fun games! The evening will begin with the chili-cook off competition, mac-n-cheese competition, and of course, the kids’ cornbread competition. After we eat some delicious food and vote for your favorites, we’ll play bingo from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. We’ll also have a variety of other games for everyone to enjoy.
Around the world and in different communities, January is a month of recognition and awareness:
Wednesday, January 24th marked the sixth year of International Day of Education, an annual celebration created by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight the role of education for peace and development. The day is celebrated annually on January 24th, which is a day dedicated to promoting the power of education as a transformative tool. Its history, though relatively young, tells a compelling story of global commitment to education for all. You can learn more about this day HERE.
Saturday, January 27th is the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, or the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. This is an international memorial day that commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, an event that resulted in the genocide of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities by Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945. You can learn more about this HERE.
Thursday, February 1st is the start of Black History Month. Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our country's history. You can learn more HERE.
Thursday, February 1st is also National Freedom Day. National Freedom Day was established in 1948 to commemorate the historic signing of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by President Abraham Lincoln on February 1st, 1865. This amendment outlawed slavery, representing a major step toward achieving equality for all Americans. You can learn more HERE.
With appreciation for our Soundview community,
Chris

One more thing…
On January 26th, 1837, Michigan was officially admitted as the 26th state in the Union. However, Michigan's path to statehood wasn't without its own share of drama. A skirmish with Ohio known as the Toledo War delayed Michigan's statehood and led to a trade: Toledo remained in Ohio, while the Upper Peninsula became part of Michigan. You can learn more about this HERE.
