And on Thursday, we held our first annual Spring Showcase Event on campus. This was an opportunity for our youngest students to showcase their spring projects and class work. You can see the photos below!

Here are the March and early April reminders and opportunities:

  • Our eighth graders are working on their Community Projects. Keep an eye on my Friday emails for more information about how to support their work. Remember that Evyn is running the current drive for period products. Find more info from Evyn in last week’s email HERE.

  • There is no school for students on Thursday, March 28th and Friday, March 29th for parent/teacher/student-led conferences. There will be drop-in care available for students during the time of your conferences.

  • Spring Break is April 1st through 5th. There is no school for students, and the Soundview offices will be closed. School resumes at the usual time on Monday, April 8th.

  • Spring picture day is coming up. Lincoln and Lucy Photography will be on campus one last time to offer spring pictures on Tuesday, April 9th. Pictures will be taken outside. If weather conditions do not permit outdoor photos, a spring blue background will be used instead. Check out examples HERE. If you would like your child to have their picture taken, please RSVP by Friday April 5th HERE

  • The next Orchestra recital, featuring the 6th Grade Band, is coming up on Thursday, April 11th at 5pm in the Soundview Performing Arts Center. The recital is an opportunity to share the 6th grade band class work as well as performances by the orchestra and advanced trio.

  • Soundview’s Spirit Week will take place April 15th through 19th, more information to be announced soon!

Around the world and in different communities, March is a month of recognition and awareness:

  • March 21st was World Down Syndrome Day, which began in 2007. The 21st day of March was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. The General Assembly of the United Nations has decided to observe it each year since 2012. You can learn more about this HERE.

  • March 24th is Purim, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from annihilation at the hands of an official of the Achaemenid Empire named Haman, as it is recounted in the Book of Esther. Haman was the royal vizier to the Persian king Ahasuerus. Purim is celebrated among Jews by exchanging gifts of food and drink, known as mishloach manot and donating charity to the poor, known as mattanot la-evyonim. You can learn more about this HERE

  • March 25th is Holi, which is a popular and significant Hindu festival celebrated as the Festival of Colours, Love, and welcoming Spring. It celebrates the eternal and divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna. Additionally, the day signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it commemorates the victory of Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu. You can learn more about this HERE.

This is a very exciting time for Soundview School.

One more thing…
On March 22, 1893, the first women’s college basketball game was played at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. With each basket counting as one point and the game lasting two 15-minute halves, a sophomore class team prevails over a freshmen team, 5-4. Men were not permitted inside the gym at the all-women college, but a crowd of fascinated women cheered on their fellow classmates from the running track of the campus gymnasium. The winning team earned a gold and white banner. You can learn more about this HERE.

Senda Berenson, the founder of women’s basketball, was also the first woman to officiate a collegiate basketball game on this date. You can learn more about this HERE
