Welcome Back to School!
Dear Soundview Community,
Welcome back from Spring Break! Next week is Spirit Week, a celebration of our school community. You can find daily themes on Toddle. We also host (virtually) International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program Evaluators. Soundview was the first IB authorized middle school in the state of Washington. Every five years our faculty and staff engage in the program evaluation, which includes moderation of our unit plans, student assessment, and a comprehensive self-study and program development plan. The process culminates in the visit. We finish next week at the Soundview Spring Benefit Event on Saturday, April 20th!
For those who can't make it on Saturday, we've made it easy for you to support Soundview. Make your gift HERE. You will be funding a number of Soundview’s most important programs, from the International Baccalaureate to the maintenance of our forest to need-based financial aid and scholarships. Thank you once again for your unwavering support.
Yesterday was this year’s final orchestra recital, showcasing the sixth-grade band. The students exhibited exceptional skill, a testament to their remarkable progress under the guidance of their teacher, Mrs. Higgins. You can see photos from this event by visiting HERE.
Here are the April reminders and opportunities:

Around the world and in different communities, April is a month of recognition and awareness:
April is recognized as National Stress Awareness Month to bring attention to the negative impact of stress. Managing stress is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. You can learn more about this HERE.
April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. This month-long campaign focuses on education, awareness, and early diagnosis, with the goal of overall better quality of life. You can learn more about this HERE.
April is Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month. Since it began as Mathematics Awareness Week back in 1986, the aim has been to increase the level of interest in the study of mathematics and also increase the level of public understanding and appreciation for the wide range of applications for mathematics in fields as diverse as manufacturing, business and medicine. You can learn more about this HERE.
April is National Minority Health Month. This annual observance builds awareness about the health disparities that persist among racial and ethnic minorities and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations and encourages everyone to take action to end these inequities. You can read more about this HERE.
See you for Soundview Spirit Week,
Chris

One more thing…
On April 12th, 1893 Harold Washington (1922 – 1987) was elected Chicago's first black mayor — winning the historic race-dominated battle that attracted national attention and winning the election by a narrow margin. He was an American lawyer and politician who was the 51st Mayor of Chicago. Washington stressed reforming the Chicago patronage system and the need for a jobs program in a tight economy.
