Congratulations to Our Fifth Graders!
Dear Soundview families,
As we find ourselves on the cusp of the final week of this academic year, we’re spending time in celebration and reflection. What have we accomplished? What qualities have we strengthened? What has been challenging? What have we overcome? How have we helped others? What relationships have we built? What have been the highlights? What are we curious about? What are we looking forward to?
This week, our early childhood class did a tie-dye workshop, our third- and fourth-grade classes adventured to the Woodland Park Zoo, and our fifth-graders presented their Exhibition projects. The fifth-grade exhibition, a hallmark event of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, provided a platform for our students to engage with global issues sourced from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Our school community is inspired to take action. You can see photos of the zoo field trip HERE and from the Exhibition below.

Around the world and in different communities, June is a month of recognition and awareness:
Sunday, June 2nd was National Cancer Survivors Day. This is an annual, treasured celebration of life that is held in hundreds of communities around the world on the first Sunday in June. It is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families and an outreach to the community. Normally on National Cancer Survivors Day, thousands gather across the globe to honor cancer survivors and to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fulfilling, rewarding and inspiring. You can learn more about this HERE.
Wednesday, June 12th is Loving Day. Loving Day is celebrated annually to commemorate the 1967 Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, which struck down anti-miscegenation laws in 16 U.S. states, making interracial marriage legal in the country. The ruling stated that restricting marriage based on race violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The day is a global celebration of community, education, and visibility, and is especially significant for interracial couples, multiracial families, people of mixed race, and transracially adopted people. You can learn more about this HERE.
June is National Safety Month. In 1996, the National Safety Council designated June as National Safety Month. The goal was to increase awareness of the leading safety and health risks facing employees and decrease the risk for workplace injuries and deaths in the U.S. 2023 marks 27 years of National Safety Month. You can learn more about this HERE.
June is National Scoliosis Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the spinal disorder and promote early detection. The month also aims to support people living with scoliosis and emphasize the importance of comprehensive care and early intervention. You can learn more about this HERE.
As we approach the culmination of another enriching school year, let us cherish these final moments together and reflect on the collective achievements and growth we've experienced as a community.

One more thing…
On June 7th, 1893 was Gandhi’s first act of civil disobedience. In an event that would have dramatic repercussions for the people of India, Mohandas K. Gandhi, a young Indian lawyer working in South Africa, refuses to comply with racial segregation rules on a South African train and is forcibly ejected at Pietermaritzburg. You can learn more about this HERE.
