Teacher Appreciation Week!

Soundview is brimming with anticipation as we eagerly await the upcoming week to honor and celebrate the tireless dedication of our hardworking teachers! Learn how you can contribute and volunteer for Teacher Appreciation Week by visiting HERE.

It’s been another fruitful week unfolded on campus, with both students and staff engaging in various activities. Our dedicated Director of Enrollment, Victoria Nunes, has been conducting multiple tours each week for families interested in Soundview. If you know someone who is interested in a Soundview education please have them contact Victoria by clicking HERE

On Thursday, May 2nd, the Kamiak Traveling Children’s Show visited our campus, treating the entire school to a captivating performance based on the beloved book, “The Day The Crayons Quit.” We invite you to relive the excitement through the photos captured during this event, available by viewing them below.

Additionally this week on Thursday, the 6th graders had an opportunity to combine Math and Health Education together in an engaging way. In Math class, students have been learning the fundamentals of budgeting by exploring the real-world costs and economics associated with caring for a baby during its first year of life. To bring this learning to life on Thursday, our students embarked on a field trip to Safeway for hands-on cost research purposes. This allowed them to gain practical insights into the expenses involved in raising a child. At the conclusion of the field trip, each student selected a 1lbs pack of flour to kick off the "flour baby" project. In Health Education, they are now tasked with the responsibility of caring for their "baby." This involves keeping a constant watch over their flour baby and ensuring that it maintains its weight of 1 lbs over the course of one week. This cross-curricular activity not only reinforces key mathematical concepts but also instills important life skills related to responsibility and caretaking. You can see photos from this field trip below.

Also, our school recently joined hands with PAWS to commemorate National Volunteer Appreciation Week, observed from April 21st to 27th. During this week of gratitude, the compassionate students at Soundview lent their assistance by crafting heartfelt thank-you cards for the incredible volunteers who tirelessly care for animals year-round. With over 850 dedicated volunteers, PAWS ensures the well-being of countless dogs, cats, and wildlife, round the clock. These selfless individuals play a pivotal role in sustaining PAWS' mission, from nurturing shelter animals with tasks like food preparation, dog walking, and cat companionship, to supporting wildlife through dietary preparation and enclosure maintenance. Their unwavering commitment is the backbone of PAWS' success in helping more animals in need. To discover more about the PAWS volunteer program you can do so by visiting HERE

Around the world and in different communities, May is a month of recognition and awareness:

  • May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This is observed in the United States during the month of May, and recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7th, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10th, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. You can learn more about this HERE

  • May is Jewish American Heritage Month. Each May, hundreds of organizations and Americans of all backgrounds join together to discover, explore, and celebrate the vibrant and varied American Jewish experience from the dawn of our nation to the present day. You can learn more about this HERE

  • May is Mental Health Awareness Month.  Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 by Mental Health America to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans' lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. The month is observed with media, local events, and film screenings. Mental health awareness is the ongoing effort to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health conditions by sharing our personal experiences. Often, because of misconceptions about mental health and mental fitness, people often suffer in silence and their conditions go untreated. You can learn more about this HERE

  • May 5th is Cinco de Mayo.  Cinco de Mayo is a yearly celebration held on May 5th to celebrate Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza.  It's also known as Battle of Puebla Day. France sent troops to Mexico with hopes of taking control of Mexican territory to expand its empire. You can learn more about this HERE

Have a great weekend everyone,

One more thing…
On May 3rd, 1979, Margaret Thatcher of the Conservative Party was elected British prime minister, becoming the first woman in Europe to hold that post; she later became the longest continuously serving British premier since 1827. She was the first woman ever to hold that job, or to lead any big country in Europe or America, and became famous all over the world. She was often called "the Iron Lady", and in fact was pleased when she was given the nickname - by a Russian newspaper - because she believed in being a strong leader.
