Three Weeks Left of School!
Dear Soundview Families,
This week was eventful at Soundview, from field trips to performances. Middle school Declamations was on Thursday in the Soundview Performing Arts Center. Declamations is a long-standing Soundview tradition. It is a live variety show, entirely produced by our students. Bravo middle school students! You can see photos from the event below.
In addition, our first- through fourth-grade students made tie-dye with Mrs. Leah this week. They created vibrant headbands for our upcoming Soundview Field Day in June. Tie-dye was collaborative and creative. You can see a few photos from the tie dye making session below.
Meanwhile, our kindergarten class’s current unit is focused on transportation systems that serve communities. Through hands-on activities and discussions, they're exploring the features of various transportation modes, understanding the reasons behind their usage, and discovering how transportation networks connect communities. As part of their unit, kindergarteners embarked on a field trip to explore and experience transportation in our community. They rode buses and ferries, and they enjoyed lunch at the beach. You can see photos from the trip below.
Today, our first- and second-grade classes visited Olympic Beach in Edmonds. One of our parent volunteers is a beach naturalist and led an inquiry into the creatures of Puget Sound's intertidal zone. Students gently explored tide pools under the pier and learned how to keep the animals and their homes safe. They put the concepts of their conservation unit into action.
Here are the May and June reminders and opportunities:
Soundview is closed Monday, May 27th, in observance of Memorial Day. There is no school for students on Tuesday, May 28th. Faculty and staff will be preparing final report cards. No care or clubs are available. School resumes at the usual time on Wednesday, May 29th.
The fifth-grade’s Exhibition is open to the entire community on June 6th, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 pm in Soundview’s classrooms and Performing Arts Center. The Exhibition is the culminating project of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. Fifth-graders around the world are doing the same thing! You will talk with students about a global issue they’ve selected form the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Read more about the goals HERE.
Saturday, June 8th is our Soundview Parent and Guardian Association (SPGA) Spring Social. The Soundview community will gather at Meadowdale Park from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm to celebrate the end of the school year. It’s bring-your-own food, beverages, and games. You can learn more about the park and its location by visiting HERE.
On June 11th, Soundview will host Field Day, featuring an array of engaging activities tailored for students from kindergarten through eighth-grade. Rather than organizing teams based on grade levels, students will be grouped by the color of their vibrant headbands, fostering collaboration and camaraderie across different age groups as they navigate the course together. Stay tuned for further details in the upcoming weeks!
The last day of the school year is Thursday, June 13. The last day of school follows the usual start and end times.

Around the world and in different communities, May is a month of recognition and awareness:
World Thyroid Day (WTD) is celebrated on May 25th to raise awareness about the thyroid gland, which is located at the base of the neck and produces hormones that regulate metabolism. World Thyroid Day is a global healthcare event celebrated on the 25th of May every year, intending the recognition of thyroid disease burden, the patient's experience and all those committed to the international study and treatment of thyroid illnesses. You can learn more about this HERE.
Monday, May 27th is Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30. Since 1971, it has been observed on the last Monday of May. You can learn more about this HERE.
May is Lupus Awareness Month in the United States, and has been since 1979. Lupus can cause inflammation and pain in any part of your body. It’s an autoimmune disease, which means that your immune system — the body system that usually fights infections — attacks healthy tissue instead. The month is dedicated to raising awareness about lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions of people worldwide. You can learn more about this HERE.
May is Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Awareness Month. (CF) is a genetic disease that causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other parts of the body. The thick mucus can clog organs and cause damage or infections. The month is a time for the CF community to share personal stories, learn about the disease, and unite behind the mission of finding a cure for all people with CF. You can learn more about this HERE.
Enjoy the long weekend,
Chris

One more thing…
On May 24th, 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public after 14 years of construction and $15 million to complete. Thousands of residents of Brooklyn and Manhattan Island turned out to witness the dedication ceremony, which was presided over by President Chester A. Arthur and New York Governor Grover Cleveland. The bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time, connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, and spanning across the East River. It is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States and the first constructed using steel wire. You can learn more about this HERE.
